Where historical charm meets contemporary elegance in the heart of Adelaide.

Completed in February 2024, Hill House is a remarkable residential project situated in the heritage-rich locale of Adelaide, South Australia. With architecture by Proske and interiors by Proske and CVL Studio, this project harmoniously blends modern design with the existing character of the area. Nestled in Kaurna Country, Hill House stands as a testament to thoughtful design and meticulous craftsmanship, enhancing both the aesthetic and functional aspects of the living space.

Erin Crowden, Associate at Proske, explains that the design ethos for Hill House is rooted in “an appreciation for natural materials and the combination of lightness and solidity” inspired by the existing residence. The client brief was to create a space that “maximises connection to the outdoors and facilitates both large gatherings and intimate settings, all while respecting the heritage of the area.”

Embracing this challenge, the design team at Proske skilfully enhanced the historical character of the existing structure while thoughtfully integrating modern elements. The kitchen, designed as an art installation within the home, exemplifies this balance. By concealing most of the functional elements within full-height Evenex European oak cabinetry, the design allows the natural materials of the exquisite Arabescato Vagli marble of the island and rear bench to take centre stage.

This thoughtful approach extends to the entire living space. One of the standout features of Hill House is the dynamic play of light within the kitchen and living areas. This transformation has created a space that connects seamlessly with the surrounding courtyards, providing varied outlooks in all directions. A particularly striking design element is the arched curve transition from the existing structure to the new addition.

Designed as a place to gather, mingle, and socialise, the kitchen is well-suited to both large groups and intimate gatherings. Reflecting the project's dedication to quality, Bosch Home Appliances were specified for Hill House based on the client's previous positive experiences and thorough research.

“Bosch is synonymous with quality. The client loves the way the appliances are integrated in the space. The induction cooktop with downdraft ventilation is a particular favourite.” – Jake Devlin, General Manager at Craig Linke Bespoke Building.

Hill House by Proske and CVL Studio is an exemplary project that showcases the harmonious blend of heritage conservation and modern design. The thoughtful integration of natural materials, the feel and play of light within the kitchen and living areas, and seamless transitions between old and new highlight the meticulous craftsmanship and innovative approach of the design team.
